White Cat
Movement I, from 'Miss Brodie's Cats' - Orchestra
(2002)
The three short movements that make up my orchestral pieces, ‘Miss Brodie’s Cats’ were inspired by the three feline characters in my charge when house sitting for a week in Onehunga. They’re dedicated to Sally Brodie, whose sense of humour is infectious.
Sally left me a message about White Cat: “ There’s a water pistol on the kitchen table if White Cat should get on the bench.” I visualised the encounters I was likely to strike up with the cat…and came up with this piece.
White Cat was recorded by Radio New Zealand at the Auckland Philharmonia’s composer read throughs in 2003 and was then included in their Philharmania concert for 6-11 year olds in September that year.
Instructions for how to get ahead of yourself while the light still shines
A choral setting of Jenny Bornholdt's poem for 2 part treble voices, amplified oboe and piano.
I set this fantastic poem, Instructions for how to get ahead of yourself while the light still shines by Jenny Bornholdt to music in 2002 when I was working at Diocesan School for Girls’ and wrote it especially for the Year 7 and 8 choir at the school at the time. I wanted to capture something of the effect of the speed of the bike and interplay of shadow and light that I imagined from the poem. The choir performed the piece at the North Shore Competitions, the Diocesan Musical showcase and The Kids’ Sing in the Auckland Town Hall. Since then, a number of choirs have performed the work
