There are many composition competitions and opportunities for you to have your original pieces performed. It's hugely satisfying to hear other people perform your piece(s), to have your music recorded and have a meaningful, real context for your learning in composition.
Below you'll find competitions and events that I'm aware of, and I'll try to keep this post up to date as new opportunities unfold.
CANZ - NELSON YOUNG COMPOSERS WORKSHOP
Organised by the Composers Association of New Zealand and geared towards University composition students - but may be of interest for Senior High School students. Compositions performed, recorded and discussed. Leading NZ composers and performers mentor participants.
COMMONWEALTH COMPOSITION COMPETITION
A brand new competition created by the Commonwealth Resounds charity and ABRSM, to encourage composition by young people in response to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Open to students 11 - 18 years old.
Deadline for entries: 1 July
NOTEFLIGHT COMPOSITION COMPETITIONS
NZCF / SOUNZ CHORAL COMPOSITION COMPETITION
The NZCF/SOUNZ Choral Composition Competition awards a prize for the best choral piece composed by a New Zealand secondary school student.
The winner of the NZCF/SOUNZ Choral Composition Competition 2020 will have the opportunity to record their piece with a school choir later this year. This recording will be posted on YouTube and shared through the NZCF / SOUNZ social media channels.
The deadline for entries has been extended to Friday 3 July.
