White Cat – Movement 1 from ‘Miss Brodie’s Cats’
The three short movements that make up my orchestral pieces, ‘Miss Brodie’s Cats’ were inspired by the three feline characters in my charge when house sitting for a week in Onehunga. They’re dedicated to Sally Brodie, whose sense of humour is infectious.
Sally left me a message about White Cat: “ There’s a water pistol on the kitchen table if White Cat should get on the bench.” I visualised the encounters I was likely to strike up with the cat…and came up with this piece.
White Cat was recorded by Radio New Zealand at the Auckland Philharmonia’s composer read throughs in 2003 and was then included in their Philharmania concert for 6-11 year olds in September that year.
